Eclipse Demo Camp Luna 2014 - Chennai - Thanks!!!

DemoCamps are an opportunity to showcase all of the cool, new and interesting technology being built by the Eclipse community. They are also an opportunity for you to meet Eclipse enthusiasts in your city. The format of a DemoCamp is informal. A group of Eclipse enthusiasts meets up and demos what they are doing with Eclipse.
The demos can be from research projects, Eclipse open source projects, applications based on Eclipse, commercial products using Eclipse or whatever may be of interest to the attendees.
Software AG is listed under “Solution Members” in Eclipse.org. Software AG Chennai Development Center India Pvt Ltd hosted the very first Chennai edition of eclipse demo camp which would prevail over the history of eclipse demo camps.

The demo camp attracted over 30 participants and showcased some excellent Eclipse technology. The demo camp was held on 11th July 2014.

The demo camp began with warm welcome words from Vasudeva Kothamasu and being a natural speaker he gave the perfect start by presenting the opening note for the camp touching upon Change, Dreaming Big & Disruptive Technology.

First up for the demo was Noopur Gupta from IBM - JDT committer with “Eclipse Luna - What’s new!” who introduced Luna to the audience. She demonstrated some of the important enhancements which come along with Luna - including the fancy new dark theme! Noopur also emphasized on contributing to the community through different channels.

The next speaker was Subramanyam CS from Intalio Software India Pvt Ltd with “eGit-extension: An extension to github myln connector”. He started with an introduction to GitHub and presented the features for the eGit-extension viz raising a pull request from within Eclipse, Visualize forks of a repository & Add remote and perform fetch using eGit-extension.

Following that, Yeshwanth Kumar J from our RnD performance team in Bangalore presented on the in-house project, “webMasters Performance Testing Tool using E4”. He took us through their journey alongside various UI frameworks and why they settled down on E4.  He touched upon the E4 features and also explained why it is important to focus on the performance of a product in it very early stages.

The last one was from our very own Tham S with “Java 8 features on Luna”. He let out the innovation part of Java 8 release viz “Lambda Expressions & Nashorn” and notable features in the core API side viz “Stream API, “Type annotations Default methods in interface, & Date Time API”. He also demonstrated code examples for the above features in Luna. This session was the top rated technical session for the day.

Thanks to Sivasubramanian T for sponsoring “Healthy code magazine” to all the participants.

The camp ended with an exquisitely wide spread buffet over which eclipsers were networking with others. The journey was a great experience for all of us. The overall rating for the camp was 8/10 which showed up in the feedback form filled in by the participants. Thanks to Vasu, Mahendran, Venkat, Falconz and the whole team in Chennai for their great support in making this event a successful one.
